Work Problems

Work problems can affect confidence, mood, stress, sleep, and overall wellbeing. Difficulties at work may involve overload, conflict, bullying, poor leadership, loss of confidence, job insecurity, burnout, or feeling chronically dissatisfied and stuck.1

At Mind Health, we support people in Parramatta and Sydney who are struggling with work-related stress, occupational pressure, workplace conflict, or loss of functioning at work. Treatment focuses on understanding the specific stressors involved and building a plan that is both psychologically and practically useful.

Important: Work problems are not always “just stress.” If work is affecting your sleep, mood, performance, health, or relationships outside work, it is worth taking seriously.

Signs & Symptoms

Work-related problems can affect you physically, mentally, emotionally, and behaviourally. Common signs include:1

  • constant worry about work outside working hours
  • feeling tense, exhausted, irritable, or unable to switch off
  • poor concentration, mistakes, or difficulty making decisions
  • avoidance of work tasks, meetings, or colleagues
  • headaches, sleep problems, stomach upset, or muscle tension
  • loss of confidence, increased self-doubt, or fear of failure
  • taking more sick leave or dreading going to work
  • conflict at work starting to spill into home life and relationships

Causes

Work problems can arise from a range of individual and organisational issues. Contributing factors may include:1

  • workload that is too high or constantly urgent
  • poor role clarity, low support, or unrealistic expectations
  • conflict, bullying, harassment, or poor workplace culture
  • lack of control, recognition, or job security
  • perfectionism, anxiety, people-pleasing, or difficulty setting limits
  • external stressors such as family pressure, caring roles, or poor sleep

Sometimes the work environment is the main issue. Other times, workplace stress interacts with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, or burnout.

Our Approach to Work Problem Support

At Mind Health, support for work problems focuses on helping you understand the pressure points, reduce the mental and physical cost, and decide what practical changes are needed. That might involve coping differently, communicating more clearly, or reassessing what is sustainable.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT can help address worry, perfectionism, avoidance, catastrophising, and the thought patterns that intensify work stress.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT can be helpful when work problems are tied to over-control, conflict avoidance, values mismatch, or feeling trapped between pressure and self-expectation.

Problem-Solving and Boundary Work

Treatment may include assertive communication, pacing, return-to-work support, workload triage, and planning around difficult workplace conversations or transitions.

Workplace Context and Support Options

Where relevant, support can also include workers compensation considerations, return-to-work planning, liaising with medical care, or making use of employer-funded EAP support if that pathway is available to you.

Tips on Managing Work Problems

  1. Be specific about the problem. “Work is stressful” is often too broad. Clarity helps treatment.
  2. Notice what follows you home. Rumination, dread, and emotional spillover are important signs the issue is affecting more than just your workday.
  3. Set limits where possible. Boundaries around time, availability, and expectations matter.
  4. Get support early. Problems at work often worsen when people isolate, avoid, or keep pushing through.
  5. Take safety seriously. Bullying, harassment, or severe mental health deterioration at work may need more formal action and support.

What to Expect

Your first appointment will usually focus on what the work problem is, how long it has been affecting you, what the consequences have been, and whether anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, or sleep problems are also involved. The goal is to understand both the workplace context and your response to it.

Sessions are typically 50 to 60 minutes. Treatment is practical, collaborative, and often focused on clarifying options rather than just venting. Telehealth may also be suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can therapy help if the workplace itself is the problem?

Yes. Therapy can help you think more clearly, protect your wellbeing, and respond more effectively, even when the environment is a major part of the issue.

What if I am being bullied or harassed at work?

That should be taken seriously. Psychological support can help with the impact, but formal workplace or legal pathways may also be relevant.

Can work problems lead to anxiety or depression?

Yes. Ongoing workplace strain can contribute to anxiety, depression, burnout, poor sleep, and physical stress symptoms.

Do I need a referral to get help for work problems?

You do not need a referral to book privately. If you want to access Medicare rebates, you will usually need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from an eligible doctor.
